5 Ways to Make the Most Out of the Quarantine

For many of us, the start of 2020 has not gone according to plan. While we kicked off the year with lots of hopes and dreams in the form of resolutions, the global COVID-19 pandemic has brought the entire world to a near standstill.

Travel plans have fallen apart. Stock investments have taken a hit. Schools and universities have suspended classes, leaving students in doubt about their next steps. Revenue has drastically dropped in this less-than-ideal economy, and to compensate, many employees had to be let go. These problems are just the tip of the iceberg; the pandemic has caused an endless list of difficulties and inconveniences. To top it all off, cities are in lockdown and residents are under quarantine, leaving them no choice but to simply accept the situation they are in. Doesn’t sound very optimistic, does it?

Though you may feel like you are constantly being hit by a big wave of negativity, it is important that you find a way to surround yourself with positivity to outweigh the negativity. It is also important to remember that most problems are opportunities in disguise, and if you reframe the problem, you will come to see that COVID-19 is one too.

Giving up your lifestyle and staying home for the next few weeks or even months can seem a little daunting, but if you see your circumstance as an opportunity to do things you never had the time to do before, the lockdown or home-quarantine will not seem too bad. Here are 5 things you can do from the comfort of your couch:

1. Pick Up New Skills

If you are used to leading a busy life, you might not have had the luxury of time to pick up new skills that interest you. Guess what? You now have a lot of time on your hands, so do not take this opportunity for granted. There are lots of online learning platforms – like Coursera and Udemy – offering a plethora of both free and paid courses on a multitude of subjects that you can take advantage of. You can improve your current set of skills and acquire new ones, all while entertaining your curiosity.

2. Get a Life Coach

If you want to take self-development to a whole new level, you should consider working with a life coach, over the phone or the Internet, of course. A coach can help you with communication, goal-setting, and overcoming your fears. They can also help rid your mind of self-limiting beliefs and teach you to be confident, self-motivated, and to take accountability for your thoughts and actions.

Even if you cannot leave your house at this time to hit the gym or go for a jog in the park, you can always download one of the many free workout apps available and create your very own exercise regimen that you can do at home. Similarly, even if you cannot go to the supermarket to stock up on nutritious food, grocery delivery services in many cities are still in service. This is the perfect time for you to get your health on track!

4. Cultivate the Habit of Reading

Reading is one of the best habits you can cultivate. It shows you the world through different eyes, challenges your thoughts and perceptions, and broadens your perspective. If you find yourself bored and wondering how you can pass the time, pick up a book – any book – and read! If you do not own one, well, Amazon and Book Depository both have huge collections with something for everyone.

5. Sit Back and Relax

While it is a good thing to be as productive as possible during a lockdown or a quarantine, it is equally important to sit back and relax. On a typical day, you may sometimes have so many things to tick off your to-do list that you don’t get the chance to hit pause. Now, you have all the time you need to unwind. Watch new movies, listen to your favorite songs, meditate, and do whatever makes you happy.

Last but not least, do not forget to observe personal hygiene. Wash your hands regularly, wear face masks, sanitize your belongings every day, and avoid crowded places. Stay safe!
