I don’t know if it is part of our nature, but I bet you would agree with me when I say we humans do not like feeling left out. There is a widely-used slang term FOMO, which stands for “fear of missing out”, that has even been added to the dictionary. FOMO refers to the feeling or perception that everyone else is leading a better life, experiencing better things, and having more fun than you are. It could affect your self-esteem and trigger a deep sense of envy.
If you search “#FOMO” on social media, you will see lots of posts with people posing at new restaurants, popular bars, crowded music festivals, and anything else that is the talk of the town, which goes to show just how common and normalized the fear of missing out is if people are publicly acknowledging it.
However, if we give so much importance to doing what others are doing, when will we do anything for ourselves?
Many of us think that being different from the norm reflects badly on us. In fact, we tend to look differently at people whose actions, behavior, or looks do not conform to our idea of normal. Contrary to this belief, the ingenious Albert Einstein once said, “The person who follows the crowd will usually go no further than the crowd. The person who walks alone is likely to find himself in places no one has ever seen before.”, and his words hold true to this day.
Dare to Be Different
If you look closely at people who have achieved massive success, you will notice that they are not like everyone else. They achieved success because they dared to be different. They realized that following the crowd kills creativity and limits capabilities, thereby ultimately preventing them from attaining the greatness they were meant for. So they broke away from toxic habits and mindsets that have everyone else tethered.
It is not wrong to follow the crowd. After all, we all aspire to feel wanted and included in the community, and doing activities together and having shared values will help you achieve exactly that.
However, if you ask me, it is wrong to follow the crowd mindlessly. You should not follow other people’s dreams if they are not yours. You should not copy others’ goals and set them as yours if they do not mean anything to you. You should not live for other people or the way others think you should live. You should be true to yourself and have your best interests at heart.
Don’t follow the crowd! Dare to stand out!
