How to be Happy
“When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy.’ They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.” recalled the famous John Lennon.
During our defining period of adolescence, most of our answers to the question “What do you want to be in the future?” would have likely been a specific profession, for example, a pilot or a musician. Some of us, myself included, might not have yet figured out an answer at that point. However, if we think more in depth, we can all relate to Lennon and agree we just wanted to grow up to be happy. We believed that following our passion, whether it involves flying an aircraft or playing the guitar, would eventually lead us to happiness.
In the years that followed, some of us may have found our happiness, and owing to the obstacles life had in store for us, some of us may still be searching for it. Perhaps we haven’t yet realized our dreams or the very things that we thought would bring us happiness just didn’t. Whatever the reasons may be, there is no need to not lead a happy life, especially when you can create your own happiness.

Hit Pause and Reflect on Your Accomplishments
When we want to achieve something, it’s easy to become fixated on things that are not going according to plan. We rack our brains trying to figure out ways to steer everything in the right direction. In doing so, we stress ourselves out, and become frustrated. We might even feel discouraged.
When you feel overwhelmed, hit pause. Close your eyes, take in deep breaths and think of all the times your plans worked out successfully. Imagine all the feelings you had at the time and channel them into the present. Instead of focusing on the negatives, shift your attention to the positives, and you will feel a lot lighter. A relaxed state of mind ensures productivity and will get you where you need to be.

Include Little Things You Love in Your Day-to-Day Life
The saying “Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things” is true in every sense. More often than not, it’s the small things in life that make us happy. It could be taking a stroll in a grassy park, listening to our favorite tunes on the way to work, getting a cup of latte from our favorite coffee shop, or chatting with our best friends.
Whatever it is, find what puts a smile on your face and add it to your schedule along with the other must-dos. Let your calendar remind you that being happy is another one of your daily obligations.
Surround Yourself with the Right Company
It’s crucial that we surround ourselves with people who motivate and uplift us. They should inspire us to be the best versions of ourselves and help us reach new heights in life. While being supportive, they should also not hold back from constructively pointing out our mistakes and shortcomings to help us improve.

There’s an old saying that we become like those we choose to surround ourselves with, so it’s important to choose wisely.
Happiness is a state of mind. It’s not as elusive we make it out to be. With the right attitudes and mindsets, we can easily create happiness for ourselves.
