Be Lucky – What It Means

Be Lucky by Creating Luck

Imagine yourself starting from the bottom and strenuously climbing up a steep hill of obstacles until you reach the peak of victory. How would you feel being called “lucky” for having made it to the top?

What some people see when they see a new artist breaking through to fame or an entrepreneur who has successfully realized their visionary ideas is just what meets their eyes – the victory that the said artist and entrepreneur are basking in. However, they fail to notice the years of hard work. The countless sleepless nights and struggles that had to be endured on their respective roads to success. Without knowing all these, it’s easy to assume that others had it easy and to call them “lucky”, suggesting a miracle. However, this would be a gross misconception.

Andres Pira: Homeless to Billionaire

In fact, people have called me lucky. They don’t believe a homeless man could have become a billionaire had luck not been on his side. Little do they know of the hardships I faced, the hurdles I overcame and all the effort I had to put in even if it didn’t pay off all the time.

Believe in Luck to Be Lucky

I believe in luck. However, I disagree that it entails a miracle that factors into our everyday lives as much people think it does. Seneca said, “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” and that is the kind of luck I believe in.

When I was homeless and living on the many beaches of Phuket, I had hit rock-bottom and was the unhappiest I’d ever been. In an attempt to change my situation, I proactively searched for jobs. I approached all the hotels along the beach roads to see if any of them needed a young, motivated worker who spoke three languages fluently. On the second day of my job hunt, I landed a trial opportunity where I distributed brochures of a hotel to tourists and let them know about the latest promotions and travel packages. With each passing week, I aimed to gain as much knowledge and experience as possible and grow my skill set. Within just three years, I became the Sales Director of a real estate agency.

Create Opportunities

Opportunities rarely come knocking on our doors. We have to set out to find them or create opportunities ourselves. That’s what I did. Instead of waiting for money to come to me, which is highly unrealistic, I actively looked for ways to obtain it. I prepared myself to earn money when I approached hotels enquiring about vacancies and actually started making it when I found the right opportunity at one of those hotels. When my hard work and efforts paid off, I felt lucky.

If anything, my luck wasn’t a miracle. It was something that I visualized, worked towards and achieved.
