If there’s one thing more admirable than someone who has meticulously strategized their steps and successfully achieved their goals, it’s seeing the perseverance and willpower of someone who gets back up on their feet after repeatedly falling.
Resilience is a wonderful trait to have. In essence, it’s the ability to adapt and bounce back when something difficult happens in our lives. It is the strength we find inside ourselves to move forward after a traumatic or life-changing experience. It’s a testament to an unwavering belief in ourselves and the cause we’re fighting for, even when those around us may feel differently.
Our levels of resilience will develop and change throughout our lives. Sometimes, we may find ourselves not coping as well as others, but on other occasions, we may surprise ourselves.
Here are 5 great ways to build resilience:
1. Accept that Change is Part of Life
The wise Greek philosopher Heraclitus once said, “change is the only constant in life”. When experiencing a “rock-bottom” moment, most people just assume they will feel how they’re feeling forever. When feeling that way, it’s important to remember that there are more changes yet to come your way, many of which will spread a smile across your face. After all, life isn’t a smooth ride. It’s a bumpy one with countless ups and downs.
2. Understand that No Problem is Undefeatable
When most people see problems, all they see are hurdles that are impossible to pass. Life isn’t exactly an Olympic hurdle race with strict rules, so if you want to climb onto something that will lift you just high enough to leap over, no one can stop you!
I wake up every morning expecting problems, whether it’s at home or work, small or big. Don’t get me wrong – I don’t jolt up from bed every day worrying that something terrible is about to happen. Instead, I have come to terms with the fact that problems are an inevitable part of life. If past experiences are anything to go by, I also know that no problem is undefeatable.
3. Set Realistic Goals
Some situations may be daunting. However, it’s important to take a step back and see these situations in a practical way. Brainstorm ways to overcome the issue at hand and set realistic goals, no matter how small they seem, to work at resolving the problem.
4. Fill Your Mind with Positive Thoughts
Whenever you hear voices in your head that create self-doubt, practice self-affirmation. Say aloud, “I can do this!”, “I’m very good at my job!”, and any other declarations that contradict your negative thoughts; repeat these each day.
Daily affirmations are very important to keep our moods elevated and our subconscious programmed with the right thinking and behaviors we need to achieve our goals. They give us control over our minds and, therefore, control over our lives.
5. Develop & Maintain Healthy Relationships
Maintaining good relationships with close family members, friends, and other people in your life whom you trust is vital. Those who truly care for you will be there even at your lowest to support and encourage you, making sure you bounce back.
The way we view adversities strongly affects how we succeed. It’s important to train our minds to have a positive outlook regardless of how bleak things may seem. Doing so builds our resilience and ensures that we bounce back.
