Self Discipline & its Importance

Do you have self-discipline?

Before you answer, allow me to clarify the definition of the word. Self-discipline is the principle of taking consistent action regardless of the situation you are in. Setting out to achieve what you have planned for the day. You do this whether the sun is out shining or dark gray clouds are hovering over your head. Without self-discipline, it’s easy for us to become distracted and slowly forget about the goals we have set for ourselves.

I was fortunate that my father taught me to be self-disciplined. When I was in school, it was mandatory for me to do my homework immediately after getting home. Before I went to bed every night, he would take one of my schoolbooks and ask me questions just to make sure I had revised. All it took was one wrong answer for him to send me back to my room to study until I mastered everything I was taught by my teachers that day. When it comes to gaining knowledge, I owe my sense of dedication and self-discipline to my father.

His lessons came in extremely handy when I set my first goal in life while homeless on the beaches of Phuket. My goal was to find a job that would give me enough money to get a roof over my head. I walked tirelessly along the hotel lined roads adjacent to the beaches. I asked every one of them if they were hiring. Under the scorching heat, I felt like giving up, but I powered through until I found a job. Had I not put in as much effort as I did, someone else with a higher level of self-discipline might have snatched the opportunity from me.

Believe in Self-Discipline

The discipline we apply to our goals allows us to attract wealth and unlimited opportunities in life. If we don’t use it, our lives will be driven by our moods and be just as unpredictable. One day, we might be moving mountains while on another, we might find ourselves on the verge of giving up.

I find that writing down goals on a piece of paper and placing them within sight trains our self-discipline. Studies have also shown those who write down their goals are more likely to achieve their goals compared to those who don’t. The reason why the seemingly small act of writing down one’s goals works is because it serves as a constant reminder. Even when we forget about our goals it helps reignite the drive to achieve them, thereby disciplining our wavering minds. If the goal is so important that we’ve written it down as a reminder, it is undoubtedly worth fulfilling.
