We all crave success, want to be successful and feel the sense of accomplishment that comes with it. We spend our lives chasing after money, fame, education, relationships, and a thousand other things, thinking that they will help us attain success, without figuring out the answer to one simple yet extremely important question: What exactly is “success”?
Society Influences Our Idea of Success
Before we answer the question, let’s look into one of the biggest factors that define our understanding of the word – societal influence. We acquire most of our knowledge of the world from others. If we relied solely on our own senses, our knowledge would, unquestionably, be very limited. This form of reliance, whether we realize it or not, means we’re subject to the influence of others.

Others’ Success Affects Us
Imagine seeing all your friends rave about the delicious food at a new Mexican restaurant in town on your Instagram feed. Naturally, you’d find yourself wanting to try it out too, at least to see what all the hype is about.
You’ll feel the same way when you see others, especially people you know, experience success. When you hear the shrill excitement in their voices and the joy on their faces as they break the news of their latest achievements to you, you want to feel the same sense of pride as they do for something you’ve achieved and you’ll automatically experience a surge in motivation levels.
Our want to be as good as everyone else has a lot to do with societal pressure. After all, we don’t want to seem like we’re falling behind while everyone else is climbing the ladder to the top. At the same time, however, societal pressure can push us to climb the wrong ladders. It may make us feel as if the goals we’re striving to accomplish are not as important or worthy as others’ goals. If society’s many voices drown our inner voices, we may end up working hard toward somebody else’s idea of success, and when we finally succeed, we may not feel the excitement and joy we yearned for.
Success is not when you triumphantly accomplish a goal that doesn’t resonate with you, or when you only accomplish something because the people around you said you should. True success is when you perfectly understand yourself, your needs and wants, and create specific goals to achieve them, even if others may call them unrealistic. Once you realize this, you’ll stand your ground and nothing people say will shake you.
I, for one, don’t share my dreams with those who wouldn’t understand. I think big and often obtain what most people would consider impossible. If I were to share my goals with everyone, most would say that I will never be able to do that, have that, or be that person I’m working hard to be. That’s the type of negativity I don’t need in my life, especially when a new, inspired idea comes to me.

Keep Your Dreams Close to Your Heart
My rule of thumb when it comes to my personal goals is that I only share them with people who can help me achieve them. Many times, that includes not sharing my goals with my family. While I love my family and know they will always support me in whatever I put my mind to, I don’t need them to doubt me for one second. Therefore, I keep my goals close to my heart, and I never let anybody rain on my parade. I want to keep my energy positive when it comes to my goals, and that usually means keeping them to myself.
Do yourselves a favor. Hit pause and think long and hard about the journey you’re on. What’s your destination? Is it what you really want? Will you be the happiest person in the world when you achieve your goal? If your answer to any of these questions is anything other than a resounding “yes”, it’s time to finally take control and steer yourself in the right direction. I believe in you!
